Voyaging for Anti-Colonial Recovery
Austronesian = of, relating to, or denoting a family of languages spoken in an area extending from Madagascar in the west to the Pacific islands in the east.
Chamorro = a member of the indigenous people of the Mariana Islands (including Guam)
goal = to illustrate how the story of the survival and revival of traditional seafaring practices can provide an indigenously-ordered, anti-colonial praxis that can simultaneously furnish what we might identify as an indigenous oceanic critique of political programs that are centered firmly on nation-state based claims of sovereignty.
Sovereignty = supreme power or authority
they can furnish an analytic and practical way to advance the political and cultural struggles of indigenous peoples in lands heavily-settler-colonized
Following Ikelap
Ikelap - big fish - appeared pretty much where the ancient chants sung them to be. When sighted it would indicate that you were eat of Guam. "pilot whales" "superficial" and a deep meaning. The surface meaning was literal: the list of creatures, stars, reefs, waterways, landmarks, and flora. when set in tune and performed correctly the list was nothing but an ancient and time honored map for travel.
Used the chants to navigate areas.
Around graves would be unopened coconut shells, soda and beer cans. the Carolinians followed pre-Christian beliefs by leaving food and drink for those who have departed the earth in human form. It was not litter, but drink.
Pookof = Used stars and islands to navigate.
Ikelap = using animals to navigate

Theaster Gates
He traveled to four cities to perfect his understanding of his unique approach to art in urban environments
Gates moved beyond formalism and commemoration.
"Black Cinema House" - a place for locals to learn filmmaking and editing skills, to screen new work and to screen, study, and celebrate films made in chicago
has a lot of ambition

Luis Camnitzer lecture
I went to the Luis Camnitzer lecture. I went in not knowing what it was about but I thought it was going to be about his work. It was not about his work at all. It was about the professor that got unhire because of what he tweeted on Twitter. I took notes but I forgot my notebook at home. I will add more to this post.

Paralyzed Iraq War Vet turned Peace Activist
On the Decomracynow.org I found a really interesting video about Tomas Young. He was an Iraq War Veteran that turned into a peace advocate. He died at the age of 34 on the eve of Veterans day. My dad is a veteran so I was drawn to the article/video. Tomas enlisted in 2001 right after the 9/11 attacks. He thought he was going to Afghanistan but instead he ended up going to Iraq in 2004. On his fifth day in Iraq he was shot and ended up paralyzed. He was in and out of the hospital until his death.

Occupy Wall street , the tragedy of student loans
I have decided to write about the video we watched called the Occupy Wall Street, the Tragedy of Student Loans. The camera man and voice of the video is a real jerk. He is basically making fun of this young girl for having a degree in Fine Arts. I think it is a wonderful thing to have a degree in. He is saying that no one forced her to take a student loan. Does he not realize that college is super expensive and most people cannot afford it if they do not take out student loans.
The girl in the video is being super nice but you can tell she is getting agitated and kind of freaked out by this weird man pointing a camera in her face. She just wanted to be apart of the protest in her own way she did not want this guy making fun of her while filming it the whole time. He was telling her that her college education was a waste and that he could have taught her more things about painting for free. I do not know who this guy is but I call bogus.

Alys
Environment: streets, peddlers, informal economy
Reacting: The intense physical labor, drawing attention to it
Form of reaction: the performance art himself,
He used the busyness of downtown Mexico City for the backdrop of his performance pieces
Ambulantes
Alys' series depended on these several individuals who push or pull carts
They did this not only in order to sell something, but also as the simplest and most efficient means of transporting merchandise through the Centro's narrow streets
He identifies with them. He is also a wanderer
Walks
wanders through the streets carrying out a single action.
Paradox of Praxis
pushed a large block of ice through Centro's streets until it melted away.
post-modern version of Sisyphu's curse
He uses his surroundings for his art work. He really doesn't spend a lot on making his work because his materials are very easy to come by.

I work at a restaurant on campus called Papa Dels. Before that I worked at Fridays back home. Before that I worked at Steak 'n Shake back home. I have been working since I was 16 years old. Steak 'n Shake was my first job. I worked there through high school, so two years. Then I transferred to the one here in Champaign. But it wasn't the same. The other workers were extremely rude and it ruined my experience of working at Steak 'n Shake. So I quit that job and didn't work again until that summer when I came back home. I worked at Fridays for the summer and then breaks during my sophomore year. Then in April of sophomore year I got hired at Papa Dels. I love it there! My coworkers are fantastic, I make pretty good tips, and I have wonderful hours. The only thing wrong with it is my boss, Pops. He is a rather condescending man and he makes me so nervous working with him. He always finds something you are doing wrong. Even if you aren't doing anything wrong. But I only work with him one of my shifts so it isn't that big of a deal.
I wouldn't consider what I do "labor" when I think of labor I think of manual labor. As in using your strength to accomplish your job. The only thing I do that I have to use any strength is when I have to carry a hot tray with a heavy pizza on it.

Art SOCIOLOGY Notes
So I read my section but, I have no idea what this is talking about. This is what I got out of it.
Underlined points it is preoccupied with a series of problems to do with ostensibly peculiar relations between persons and ‘things’ which somehow ‘appear as’ or do duty as, persons.
Consider art objects as people
Art objects as ‘persons’ in the same way.
His aim is to produce an anthropological theory of art which has affinities towards other anthropological theories.
Anthropological means the study of humans, past and present

This object is very odd. It is soft and squishy. When we dissected it we found this white fluff. We decided to ignore this and went back to the object. It is fluup in color and has a lost language written on it. When we translated ”Te Quiero” it means “The potato”. We don’t know why they would write this. It appears to be some sort of snuggle device maybe associated with children. But we are sticking it in a museum.

When We Were Kings
This film is stupid. It is about Ali VS Foreman forever ago. I give this 2 stars. I would only watch it because of the boxing.
I’m not a fan of violence. I don’t think I could watch this movie because, like, they punch each other. But Muhammad Ali is a cutie so maybe I’ll watch it for that. He is so angry though, why is he always shouting?
Crooked Arrows
This isn’t a movie I would originally pick off the shelf. But of what I saw I enjoyed.
Oh my god! So the beginning part was really cool and reminded me of this movie I used to watch as a kid. It was, like, called something, like, the Indian in the Cupboard I think. I don’t really know. But the opening was, like, really really cool. I probably wouldn’t watch this movie on my own, like, this isn’t a movie I would be like LETS WATCH THIS ONE! But I would probs watch the full thing, maybe.
City of God
Well, now, this just doesn’t look like my kind of movie. I wouldn’t watch this in the first place.
Uh this little kid is killing people! How is this based on a true story! Oh my god this actually happens?! I do NOT want to watch this! Gross there is war and such. I’m not about that life.

Response to Brett
It was nice to look at someone else's work. Knowing that he started this project in 2008 was shocking to me. I can't imagine working on a project for 6 years. I would have given up or rushed it into being done. However if that were to have happened the product would have suffered. Watching all of the documentaries that related to his work was interesting too. Now I have different ideas of how we can shoot our mockumentary.

Response to Body project
For my comfortable one I did a sound piece, which I have done a lot of. Even though I am used to doing sound editing I liked my experimental one better. Maybe because it was fun and new and different. Or maybe because my roommates where helping me with it, I'm not sure which factor but I enjoyed the process and outcome more for my experimental project.

Today in class we did things that people in other majors would deem odd. However in the school of Art and Design, these things occur more often than not. We first sat in a circle and had three people read aloud the reading. I had a hard time catching what they were saying sometimes. I'm one of those people who has to look at the text has it is being read too me.
After that we got paper out and you told us to draw what we felt around us, what we smelled, what we heard, how we felt sitting on the floor. I drew a picture of an apple on the ground with wind blowing around it. This is because what I smelled was my apple scented conditioner so I turned myself into an apple. What I heard was the air conditioner which sounded like wind to me.
Next we all got up and did a simon says activity type thing. Where someone does an action and everyone follows and then when the "leader" makes eye contact with someone that person must now do an action and so on and so forth. You said we did the exercise a little differently than expected, I'm not sure what it was supposed to be like. But I enjoyed it. I love it when classes get us up and going.
